Why You Can’t Just Sell To Your Customers On Social Media.

When you’re writing posts for your social media the temptation to write sales messaging can be overwhelming. The problem is you are writing for social media, a place where people only follow accounts that are offering them something they want to see.

Constantly selling to your customers through  your posts is not going to drive you more sales, in fact it will diminish your returns as people are more likely to scroll straight past your posts in favour of something more interesting. Your posts will eventually stop being shown in followers feeds as they’ll be deemed unengaging.

If you want to keep growing your brand’s presence on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or any of the other social networks, then you need to be adding value to their feeds. That value could be content that inspires them, entertains them, educates them, try taking off the business hat and putting on your consumer hat, write content that your customers will actually want to read.

Of course, when it comes to running ads on any of these platforms you can sell all you like, and a strong call to action is crucial. When you are producing content for your feed you need to be more mindful and consider how your posts will interest your customers.

This doesn’t mean you should just start posting memes or funny videos, the key is your content still needs to be relevant to your brand.

Consider your business and its position within your industry, what can you teach people, what information can you share that will help people better understand  your products or the industry as a whole? Can you share inspirational photos that will brighten people’s day? Could you entertain your audience with fun stories? Can you show your customers what happens behind the scenes in your business?

All of these things offer your audience something, whether it’s a bit of entertainment, new knowledge, motivation to keep pushing towards their goals, this is what makes people want to follow you and engage with you on social media.

Interacting with and responding to your customers on social media is extremely important. Not only does it keep you top of mind for your customers, but it makes them more likely to like, comment or share your posts. This then tells the algorithm of the platform you’re using that you have good content, in turn the platform will then show your posts to more people.

You can’t just sell on social media for the simple fact that it is SOCIAL media. Using these platforms to show your customers and followers the personality behind your brand is so much more valuable to your business and your audience.
